Biographical
Alan has significant experience handling all types of civil disputes, whether in state court, federal court, or arbitration. Alan began his career handling complex commercial litigation matters for large corporate clients, first at a firm with offices around the world, and then as a partner at one of the largest law firms in North Carolina.
Alan continues to focus his practice on commercial litigation, representing individuals and businesses in a wide variety of civil disputes. Alan is also certified by the NC Dispute Resolution Commission to conduct Superior Court mediations, as well as mediations of estate and guardianship cases. Alan has also served as an arbitrator in a variety of civil disputes. As a mediator and arbitrator, he offers a balanced perspective based on his years of experience representing both plaintiffs and defendants.
Alan has been listed for many years in The Best Lawyers in America (Commercial Litigation, Bet-the-Company Litigation, and Litigation-Insurance) and has been named by Best Lawyers as a “Lawyer of the Year” in Raleigh on three occasions - twice for the category of “Bet-the-Company Litigation” and once for "Litigation-Insurance." He has also been recognized on multiple occasions by North Carolina Super Lawyers magazine and Business North Carolina Magazine’s “Legal Elite,” and he has earned an A-V rating from Martindale-Hubbell. Alan is frequently asked to author articles and speak to legal and business groups regarding litigation, dispute resolution, and insurance coverage issues.
Alan firmly believes in the importance of giving back to the community. He is a former member of the Orange County Commission for the Environment and the Board of Directors of the Dispute Settlement Center. Alan also regularly volunteers to provide pro bono legal services. Alan is actively involved in the Bar and is a past Chair of the North Carolina Bar Association’s Litigation Section and a current member of the Dispute Resolution Section Council.
