Biographical
Bonum S. Wilson III (Bo) is firmly rooted in Charleston, personally and professionally. For many years, he has been an AV® rated attorney, considered by his peers to be preeminent in his field. He is a 1980 cum laude graduate of Duke University and a 1984 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Law. He began his practice in Charleston, South Carolina, that same year.
While an undergraduate, he studied abroad as the Mac Anderson Foreign Language Scholarship recipient, and began employment with the Department of Neurophysiology at Duke upon graduation. The following year, he entered the University of North Carolina School of Law in Chapel Hill. While there, Mr. Wilson worked as a law clerk for the former Charleston law firm of Pratt-Thomas Walker (then known as Wise & Cole, P.A.), served as Research Editor of the Journal of International and Commercial Regulation, and married his classmate, attorney Jeannette Heyward.
Upon graduation in 1984, Mr. Wilson continued his employment as an associate at Pratt-Thomas Walker and became a member of the firm in 1989. As a trial lawyer, his practice during some fourteen years concentrated on insurance law and defense throughout South Carolina in all state, federal, and appellate (*1) courts.
With a James Island background, Mr. Wilson opened Wilson & Heyward LLC on Folly Road in 1998, focusing on conflict resolution and insurance defense. A certified mediator and arbitrator since then, he has assisted all parties in resolving thousands of lawsuits without the necessity of trial. He also has expanded his litigation practice beyond personal injury and commercial disputes to include trial work for parties who have suffered construction deficiencies, and those contractors and sub-contractors involved in such disputes. After representing the Town of James Island in litigation matters, he was then chosen to serve as Town Attorney in 2002, a position he still enjoys. Mr. Wilson also remains counsel for the Town’s Board of Zoning Appeals. He currently serves as counsel for the James Island Charter High School and advises other local charter schools. Mr. Wilson’s clients value especially the accumulated wisdom, sound counsel, and strong and confident representation he brings to matters resulting from almost 40 years in the field.
Mr. Wilson also has served as a trustee and elder at his church, is a former vice-president of The Exchange Club of Charleston, and enjoys hunting, fishing, being on a tractor, kayaking, and skiing.
