Biographical
Judge Lang Floyd served 20 years as a trial court judge in the 28th Judicial Circuit of Alabama, including his last two years as presiding judge of the circuit. He retired from the bench in December 2016 and began his ADR practice. He currently manages a full-time statewide mediation practice from his hometown of Fairhope. Lang is registered with the Alabama Center for Dispute Resolution (alabamaadr.org) as a mediator, arbitrator, and private judge. He is also a member of the Alabama Academy of Attorney Mediators (AAAM).
During his years as a trial judge, Lang presided over more than 6000 civil cases, including over 200 jury trials and 750 non-jury trials, with some of the more complex civil litigation cases in Alabama's 28th Judicial Circuit. Many of the trials included catastrophic injuries involving products liability, medical malpractice, vehicular collisions, commercial and residential construction defects, municipal liability, and general litigation cases. His bench experience provides a unique prespective in mediations.
Lang also served for 10 years as Chair of the Alabama Court Technology Commission, overseeing the initial development and implementation of the Alacourt and Alafile electronic filing systems. In 2015, he was honored for his contributions to the court system by being awarded the Alabama State Bar Judicial Award of Merit.
In addition to an active mediation/arbitration practice, Lang remains active with the Alabama Circuit Judges Association, working with the Alabama state legislature on matters affecting the state trial courts. Since 2017, Lang has served as a Bar Commissioner to the Alabama State Bar, representing Baldwin County. He received the President's Award in 2021 and Commissioner's Award in 2022 for his work with the Bar. In June 2020, the Alabama Supreme Court retained Lang to manage the court system’s $10,000,000 reimbursement budget of COVID-19 funds under the federal Cares Act and to supervise in developing a plan for re-opening the state trial court system.
Lang is a graduate of Troy University (1978) and Cumberland School of Law (1984). He is a retired lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserves, Judge Advocate General Corp. A resident of Fairhope, Lang and Debbie have been married 44 years and have two daughters and two grandchildren. The entire family attends Fairhope United Methodist Church. In the community, Lang and his wife, Debbie, are active with Feeding the Gulf Coast and the Fairhope Arts & Crafts Festival.
