Biographical
Michael G. Mullin, a partner in the firm's Omaha, Nebraska office, serves as Chair for Kutak Rock LLP's ADR Neutrals Group. Known as one of the hardest working mediators in the United States, Mr. Mullin has mediated over 4,800 disputes, including more than 800 Zoom mediations since March 20, 2020, and is continuing to mediate approximately 250-300 disputes per year. In the 20+ years in which Mr. Mullin has served as a mediator, he has settled over 90% of his mediated disputes. He is willing to travel across the country to conduct mediations, and offers national experience at Midwest rates in virtually all types of civil disputes. Mr. Mullin has successfully mediated class action disputes, FLSA collective actions, Superfund CERCLA cost recovery actions, FELA claims, catastrophic injury cases, employment disputes, professional negligence disputes, construction disputes, intellectual property disputes, shareholder disputes and a wide range of commercial and business disputes.
As a mediator, Mr. Mullin has been repeatedly recognized by Best Lawyers in America and Chambers USA. In its 2010 edition, Chambers USA described Mr. Mullin as "an excellent mediator" and in 2009 stated he is " unquestionably a market-leading mediator, handling disputes in all sectors, from medical malpractice and products liability to PI and insurance coverage. His arrival [at Kutak Rock] is a significant boost to the firm's alternative dispute resolution capability." Mr. Mullin was named Omaha's ADR Lawyer of the year by Best Lawyers in America in its 2011 publication. He was named Omaha's Mediation Lawyer of the Year in its 2014, 2019, 2021 and 2023 publications. He was named Omaha's Insurance Lawyer of the Year in 2017 despite his full-time ADR practice. He was named Omaha's Lawyer of the year for Arbitration in 2018.
Benchmark Litigation has named Mr. Mullin a Local Litigation Star each year from 2011 through 2022. Its 2011 edition quoted a peer as stating: "Mike is hands down the best at leading mediations on all kinds of cases." Its 2012 edition quoted a competitor as stating that Mr. Mullin was "the best mediator in the state."
Chambers U.S.A. has repeatedly honored Mr. Mullin with its "Star" lawyer designation, typically awarded to three or fewer lawyers annually in the State of Nebraska.
Mr. Mullin has been recognized for the past 11 years by the International Who's Who of Commercial Mediation/Who's Who Legal:Mediation, an honor limited to approximately 400 mediators in the world and fewer than 150 in the United States.
Mr. Mullin is the first and only Nebraska mediator inducted into the prestigious International Academy of Mediators and the American College of Civil Trial Mediators. He is also a certified mediator and board member of the American Academy of ADR Attorneys. Mr. Mullin is a member of neutral panels that include AAA and Resolute Systems, Inc. In 2015 Mr. Mullin was invited to join the newly-formed AAA Midwest Master Mediator Panel. Mr. Mullin's mediation experience has been complemented by his three decades of experience as a trial lawyer, during which he was inducted into the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA), the International Association of Defense Counsel (IADC), and Litigation Counsel of America (LCA).
Mr. Mullin has been active in numerous law-related and civic organizations, and has previously served as President of the Omaha Bar Association. Mr. Mullin served for decades as an elected member of the Nebraska State Bar Association House of Delegates, where he has served on numerous committees and chaired several committees. He was also a founding member of the Nebraska Mediation Association, and has served as an officer and Chair of the ADR section of the Nebraska State Bar Association. The Nebraska State Bar Foundation honored Mr. Mullin with its "Legal Pioneer" Award in 2022 for his work in the field of mediation. In 2023, Mr. Mullin was only the 11th recipient of the Omaha Bar Association "Lifetime Achievement" Award.
