Biographical

Stew Cogan is in his twenty-eighth year as a full-time arbitrator and mediator, following twenty years practicing primarily corporate, business, and real estate law. Stew has arbitrated more than 300 cases and mediated more than 3,500 cases.

Among the matters he has handled as a neutral are cases involving partnership and shareholder disputes, banking law, contracts, business and real estate valuation, professional negligence, real estate, construction, wrongful termination, employment discrimination, covenants not to compete, intellectual property, director's and officer's liability, insurance coverage, land use, wills and trusts, taxation, and Constitutional Law.  Stew is on the Commercial Panel, the Construction Panel, the Large, Complex Case Panel, and the Mediation Panel of the American Arbitration Association (and has been designated a Master Mediator by the AAA), is a Fellow of the College of Commercial Arbitrators and the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, and is a Distinguished Fellow and Former President of the American College of Civil Trial Mediators.

Stew is listed in The Best Lawyers in America in both the Arbitration and the Mediation categories.   He was selected by Best Lawyers as the Lawyer of the Year in Arbitration in Seattle in 2016, 2020, and 2022, and was also selected by Best Lawyers as the Lawyer of the Year in Mediation in Seattle in 2017 and 2021.  Stew has been named a Super Lawyer in the ADR category for the 25 consecutive years from 1999 through 2023.  Since 2008, he has been named 14 times as a Top 100 Super Lawyer in the state of Washington.  He was also named one of the Best Lawyers in Seattle by Seattle Magazine in its last four surveys in 2001, 2003, 2005, and 2007, and one of Puget Sound's Top Business Lawyers by Seattle Business Monthly in 2006, 2007, and 2008.  He is a frequent speaker on a variety of mediation and arbitration topics. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, a Fellow of the invitation-only College of Commercial Arbitrators, and a Distinguished Fellow of the invitation-only American College of Civil Trial Mediators (which he served as President from 2015 to 2017).  He is also a Charter Member of the ADR Roundtable.


Rates Information

$900 per hour. Study time charged at hourly rate.  $450 per hour for travel time, plus out-of-pocket expenses for transportation, food, and lodging. No cancellation fee for mediations. 

Cancellation fee of up to one-half the anticipated compensation may apply if arbitration hearing of one day in length is canceled or postponed less than 14 days before scheduled hearing date, less than 30 days before the start of scheduled hearing of up to one week in length, or less than 60 days before the start of scheduled hearing of more than one week.
